Doctor Ugur Mart from the National Center for Advanced Tribology at the University of Southampton, UK, came to the State Key Laboratory of Solid Lubrication (LSL), Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics (LICP), CAS, on June 19, to carry out cooperative research. The theme of the one month long research is “Computational Chemistry Investigation of Ionic Liquids as Lubricants and Their Performance in Tribology”.

During the cooperative research period, Doctor Ugur Mart will discuss the friction between metal surfaces and between interfaces of organic compounds, structural optimization of ionic liquids and influence of chain length on the performance of ionic liquids with the researchers of the LSL.

On June 24, Doctor Ugur Mart delivered a seminar entitled “Brief Introduction to Computational Chemistry Methods and Application on Tribology”, which gave a general introduction to the multi-scale computational simulationmethods, current research condition and the application of multi-scale computational simulation in tribology.

Doctor Ugur Mart received his doctoral degree in 2006 from Tohoku University, Japan. He got research associate position at the Department of Materials Chemistry, Tohoku University, after graduation. In 2009 he joined the National Center for Advanced Tribology at the University of Southampton.

The main research interest of Ugur Mart is multi-scale modeling and simulation of properties and processes in materials, with particular emphasis on computational chemistry study of nanostructures to develop a better understanding of molecular interactions and reaction mechanisms.

Currently, his focus is on simulating tribological and tribo-chemical process using computational and analytic methods to understand the tribological processes at the molecular, micro and nano scales and to develop and design novel materials.
