The first meeting of the 4th standing committee of the Surface Engineering Institution, Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society (CMES), was held in Lanzhou on August 20.

　  During the meeting, the outline of the report about the development of the surface engineering discipline, award regulations of the Surface Engineering Institution, establishment of professional committees, carrying out of academic exchanges and other related things were discussed.

　  The meeting was presided over by Prof. CHEN Jianmin, chairman of the 4th standing committee of the Surface Engineering Committee and director of the R&D Center of Lubricating and Protecting Materials, Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics (LICP), CAS. Twenty-four members of the committee attended the meeting.
