reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline solution for the first time. These silver-molybdate electrocatalysts showed catalytic activity for ORR and higher durability than Pt/C catalyst. Such catalyst with advantages including facile synthesis, low cost and good durability could be a valuable catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction and be a potential candidate for application in alkaline fuel cells and metal–air batteries.

Conclusions:
In this study, novel silver molybdate materials prepared by the hydrothermal method were first used as electrocatalysts for ORR in alkaline solution. As compared to Pt/C, the silver molybdate showed better durability. By using Ag–Mo-22 as cathode catalyst, zinc–air battery had maximum power density of 87 mWcm−2 at 0.872 V. Such facile synthesis, low cost and high stability catalysts can be regarded as candidates for application in alkaline fuel cells and metal–air batteries.
