Abstract: In this study, the effect of aspect ratios of aramid fiber on the mechanical and tribological characteristics of friction materials was studied. It was found that with increased aspect ratio of fiber, flexural strength of the composites generally increased and compressive strength decreased, while mu and wear rate of composites increased first and then decreased at selected load and speed. With the addition of fibers, mu and wear of composites increased. 10 vol% of aramid pulp was an optimal volume fraction for improved friction and wear behaviors. The wear mechanisms were discussed under the support of worn surface morphologies. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
