Characterization of Novel Fullerene Derivatives by Laser Desorption-ionization Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry

Abstract: Laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry was used to characterize three fullerene derivatives, i.e., 1, 2-dimethylbenzene C60, 1,4-Dibenzyl-2,3-Benzamidine C60 and 2,3-Benzamidine C60. The structure of 1, 2-adducts and two novel products with addition at [5, 6] sites of C60 prepared from electrocatalytic reduction reactions was confirmed. Results of nuclear magnetic resonance further affirmed the structure of derivatives. The additive peaks of fullerene and their derivatives with oxygen were found. Laser desorption-ionization time of flight mass spectrometry provides a powerful technique for the characterization of new structural fullerene derivatives.

Key words: fullerene derivatives; laser desorption-ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (LDI-TOF-MS); structural characterization
