HPLC Determination of Formaldehyde,Acetaldehyde and Acetone in Acetate Fiber Filter Rod of Cigarettes

Abstract: A new method was developed for the simultaneous determination of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acetone in the acetate fiber filter rod of cigarettes by HPLC. Satisfactory separation was achieved on an Acclaim® Explosive E2 C18 column with a mobile phase consisted of acetonitrile/water at a flow rate of 0.5 mL/min, and the UV detector wavelength was 352 nm. The recoveries were in the range of 95.3%~105.6%, 86.1%~90.4% and 96.5%~102.2% for formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acetone, respectively, with RSD values of less than 5%. The method is simple, accurate and reproducible and can be used for the quality control of cigarettes.
