Abstract: Copper phosphotungstate was prepared and was characterized by XRD, FT-IR, and UV methods. The results suggested that copper phosphotungstate was Keggin-type stucture. A series of acylals were synthesized from corresponding aldehydes and acetic anhydride at room temperature under solvent-free conditions. At a molar ratio of 1∶2 of aldehydes to acetic anhydride, the reactions were catalyzed by 0.5 mol% copper phosphotungstate in short times with high yields from 62% to 96%. The chemoselective protection of aldehydes in the presence of ketones could be achieved by this method.
