Abstract: Using [Bmim]PF6 as solvent, 1,3-propanediol was prepared from hydrogenation of methyl 3-hydroxypropionate in the presence of K[Co(CO)4] catalyst. The activity of the catalyticsystem was better than organic catalytic system and the catalyticsystem can be reused several times after the product was separated by extraction withdeionized water. The optimum conditions were obtained as follows: imidazole as promoter, reaction temperature 165 ℃, hydrogen pressure 10.5 MPa for 10 h, the conversion of 3-HPM reached 99.4% and the yield of 1,3-PDO reached 82.9%, the catalyst could be recycled three times with the yield of 1,3-PDO not less than 70%. A possible reaction mechanism has also been proposed.
