Abstract: An efficient aerobic oxidation of alcohols to corresponding aldehydes or ketones by the catalyzed system of I2/NaNO2/4-OH-TEMPO in the presence of acetic acid was investigated. The influence of each component and the amount of catalyst were studied. Iodine is used as co-catalyst instead of metal in the reaction. Aerobic oxidations of benzylic alcohols were almost completed under optimized conditions and the product with yield of 90% can be obtained.

Key words: Iodine, 4-OH-TEMPO, benzyl alcohol, air
