Abstract: Bi0.5Y0.5VO4 solid solution was prepared by a hydrothermal pretreatment method. The crystal structure, morphology, photo absorption property and surface area of the synthesized sample were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy and N2 absorption, respectively. The results show that Bi0.5Y0.5VO4 (BYV) solid solution could be synthesized under gentle conditions after hydrothermal pretreatment. Prepared BYV was found to be capable of overall water splitting when loaded with Pt/Cr2O3. BYV synthesized under precursor pH=1.0 and calcined at 800 ºC for 6 h, exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity. The amounts of hydrogen and oxygen produced were about 80.5 μmol/h and 43.8 μmol/h, respectively.
