Abstract: Lignin was obtained from wheat straw alkaline black liquor and refined by organic solvent. Hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis of alkali lignin was investigated in the presence of catalysts NaBH4/I2 and I2 respectively. The results showed that I2 was a homogeneous catalyst in hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis of lignin. The reaction conditions were optimized. Functional groups of alkali lignin were determined by chemical methods before and after reaction. The products were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra and element analysis. The contents of total hydroxyl of lignin were determined by automatic potentiometric titration. The contents of total hydroxyl were 10.19% with an increase of 43.67% compared with the original alkali lignin. The optimum conditions were as follow, NaBH4∶I2=1∶1(mass ratio), T= 175℃, reaction time of 15 h, 1% NaOH water solution as solvent.
Key words: NaBH4/I2 catalyst; alkali lignin; hydrogenation
