Abstract: The oxidation of alcohols by N-bromosuccinimide with water as the reaction medium was developed. A series of alcohols including benzylic and aliphatic alcohols were converted into the corresponding ketones or aldehydes in high yields under catalyst-free conditions in water, except for some alcohols bearing donating substituents. However, the oxidation of less active alcohols could be carried out smoothly with Salen-Co(III) complex as a catalyst in a medium of water and CH2Cl2 mixture.
Key words: N-bromosuccinimide oxidation alcohols water salen-Co(III) complex
