Abstract: A novel lubricant named MTF for manual transmission gearbox was formulated and its physical and chemical properties were measured. Friction reduction and wear resistance of MTF were investigated on a SRV-IV reciprocating friction and wear tester using commercially available lubricants as the reference. The morphologies of the worn surfaces of steel were observed using a non-contact MicroXAM 3D surface profilor. The results indicated that lubricant MTF-2 exhibited better tribological properties than that of imported commercial lubricants at elevated temperatures and its physical and chemical properties were as good as that of the commercially available lubricant. Lubricant GL-4 was not a good lubricant for manual transmission gearbox. Lubricant, MTF was a good lubricant for manual transmission gearbox.
