UK-China Summer School
Lanzhou, China, 29 June---5 July 2009

INTRODUCTIONS:

Tribology is the “science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion”, and now core to future transport and energy efficient machines, the control of emissions and low maintenance renewable energy systems. Micro/nanotribology is becoming increasingly important for the development of new products in mechanics, chemistry, electronics, life sciences and sensors.

Surface engineering is a truly interdisciplinary topic in materials science and  surface engineering techniques can be used to develop a wide range of functional properties, cluding physical, chemical, electrical, electronic, magnetic, mechanical, wear, and corrosion properties at the required substrate surfaces. Micro/nano-tribology and nano-structured coatings have attracted a great deal of interest from both government research and industry over the last couple of decades.

The UOS-LICP Summer School is a joint event organized by the University of Southampton (UoS) and the Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (LICP). It will cover the main research areas in Tribology and Surface Engineering, especially nano-structured films/coatings, surface/interface of materials and nano/micro tribology and will provide timely opportunities for young researchers in tribology and surface engineering to network with researchers at another world leading institution and to provide opportunities for interacting with experts in this field. We are pleased to extend our enthusiastic welcome to you to this international workshop that will be held in Lanzhou, China, in 2009.

APPLICATIONS:

Students, post doctorates, and other researchers majored in Tribology
and Surface Engineering studies in China and UK are encouraged to
apply. Students will have opportunities to present their results and gain
hands-on experience with tribology and surface engineering-related
fields. Application deadline is April 1, 2009. For UK applications, please
contact Dr. S.C. Wang or Dr. L. Wang, and for Chinese applications,
please contact Dr. Liping Wang for more information.
