World renowned experts in tribology, Prof. Bharat Bhushan and Prof. Stephen Hsu visited the Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics (LICP) of the CAS on September 13. After the visit, they made a report entitled “Biomimetics—Lessons from Nature:Lotus Effects, Rose Petal Effects, Gecko feet, and Shark Skin” and “Energy, Materials, Tribology Issues in the 21st Century” respectively.
Prof. Bharat Bhushan is the director of the Nanoprobe Laboratory for Bio- & Nanotechnology and Biomimetics of the Ohio State University. He is widely acknowledged to be the expert in nanomechanics and nanotribology. He has authored 6 scientific books, more than 90 handbook chapters; has published more than 700 scientific papers and 60 technical reports and has edited over 45 books. He holds 15 U.S. patents as wells.
In his report, Prof. Bharat Bhushan introduced his laboratory’s research on nanotribology, including the principles of the super-hydrophobicity of lotus leaves, strong adhesion of gecko feet, resistance reduction and buoyancy increase of shark skin and development of bionic nanotechnology and preparation of high-performance biomimetic nano-materials using the above-mentioned principles.
Prof. Stephen Hsu is the vice chair of the International Energy Implementing Agreement on Advanced Materials and director of the Energy Institute of the George Washington University. He has over 250 publications, 7 US patents and 40 plenary lectures.
In the report, Prof. Stephen Hsu analyzed the relationship between energy, environment and sustainable development from the aspects of global warming, energy reduction and population growth; introduced the significance, application and challenges of energy saving and consumption reducing of automobiles, wind energy, solar energy and other renewable energy and energy reducing architecture.
Prof. Bharat Bhushan and Prof. Stephen Hsu were invited by Prof. XUE Qunji, member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and director of the academic committee of the LICP.
