LICP Designs Biomimetic Micro/nano Double-structural and Functional Materials with Special Wettability

Biomimetic nanomaterials have attracted considerable attention in the field of materials. Much work has been done in the preparation and functionalization of biomimetic nanomaterials in recent years.

The biomimetic materials of tribology (BMT) group headed by Professor GUO Zhiguang at the Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics (LICP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has dedicated to the study on biomimetic nano-structured materials since 2001 and achieved a series of scientific results.

They have for the first time developed a simple and inexpensive method to produce super-hydrophobic surfaces on aluminum and its alloy by oxidation and chemical modification. The super-hydrophobic surfaces show long-term stability over a wide pH range, that is, not only for pure water but also for corrosive liquids including acidic and basic solutions. The work has been published in J. Am. Chem. Soc. (2005, 127, 15670) and highlighted by Nature.

They have also carried out research on the fabrication and properties of biomimetic micro/nano double-structural and functional materials.

The related findings have been published in Adv. Mater (2008, 20,970), Appl. Phys. Lett. (2006, 89, 063104; 2007, 90, 193108; 2007, 90, 223111; 2008, 92, 063104; 2008, 93, 201909; 2010, 97, 243701; 2011, 99, 082106), ChemPhysChem (2006, 7, 1674), Inorg. Chem. (2007, 46, 7707), J. Colloid and Interface. Sci. (2006, 303, 298; 2011, 353, 335 (cover article)) and Nanotechnology (2008, 19, 445608).

Based on the previous work, the group has published a review entitled Recent progress of double-structural and functional materials with special wettability in J. Mater. Chem. (DOI: 10.1039/C1JM14327A) as a cover article. The article focuses on recent development of double-structural and functional materials with special wettability. It introduces the research prospects and directions of micro- and nano-structures as well.
