Scientific Visit by Prof. Qianhong Wu from Villanova University

Invited by Mr. Junyan Zhang, the researcher of the State Key Laboratory of Solid Lubrication of Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Qianhong Wu, from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Villanova University, the Pennsylvania State, USA, visited LICP on 20th May, and delivered an academic lecture entitled “Lubrication theory for highly compressible porous media: from red cells to skiing to a new concept for a train track”. Prof. Wu introduced in detail his research group’s newly constructed theory of lubrication based on the hydrodynamic behavior of porous media and inspired by the phenomena of erythrocyte’s flowing and skiing in capillary. Prof. Wu also proposed the future application of the theory in train track design. The lecture was not only innovative but enlightening as well. After the lecture, Prof. Wu discussed thoroughly with the teachers and students at the lab about the content of his lecture.

Prof. Wu’s researches have centered on biomechanics, mechanics of cells and tissues, sports science, fluid mechanics, the course of heat and mass transfer and so on. Some of his research results have been published on the top academic journals such as Phys. Rev. Lett., J Fluid Mech., and earned high remarks from his profession. He has developed for the first time a new theoretical system and experimental approach for fluid mechanics of porous media, which has solved the problem puzzling the biological scientists for more than 100 years, that is why the erythrocyte of which the geometry size is larger than that of the capillary can squeeze into capillary and move at a high speed for 120 days without being damaged or having biochemical reaction with the end epidermis of vessels. This excellent work has been reported in Science, Nature, The New York Times and other scientific journals and media.
