Professor Albert S.C. Chan, currently the Chair Professor and Vice President (Research Development) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, visited LICP. He was invited to be the member of the Academic Committee of the State Key Laboratory of Oxo Synthesis and Selective Oxidation in 2004. He visited the exhibition room, and was acquainted with the scientific research achievements accomplished and projects undertaken by the Laboratory in recent years. Researchers of the Laboratory communicated and exchanged views with Prof. Chan about their research progress.
Prof. Chan was elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2001. His research interests are in the following areas:
(1) Asymmetric Syntheses and their Industrial Applications.
(2) Development of Pharmaceutical Products and Related Processes.
(3) Pharmaceutical and Nutritional Products based on Chinese Medicines.
(4) New Process Sciences and their Industrial Applications.
Prof. Chan has developed the chiral medicine, naproxen, which has already been produced industrially. He has been granted more than 20 United States patents, some of which have been licensed to major global corporations. He has published 6 books and more than 500 academic papers in international journals, such as Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci., Acc. Chem. Res., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., etc, and won the National Award for Natural Sciences (Grade Two ) in 2005.
