Fluorine-free, transparent omniphobic coating with exceptional steel wool abrasion resistance for anti-stains

Abstract

Currently, fluorine-free low surface energy coatings still struggle to combine high transparency, mechanical robustness, and steel-wool abrasion resistance in a single system due to the inherent conflict between surface lubricity and mechanical strength. In this study, a hybrid silicon-based resin was successfully synthesized through the co-hydrolysis and condensation of silanes, then cured under UV irradiation to yield a tough transparent coating. The coating demonstrated superior mechanical strength, as evidenced by a pencil hardness of 6H. In addition, the integration of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) segments into the coating improved its omniphobicity and lubricity, which ensured superior self-cleaning, anti-adhesion and lubrication, More importantly, the coating demonstrated remarkable wear resistance and maintained its omniphobicity, transparency, and antifouling performances even after 4000 cycles of steel wool abrasion under an applied pressure of 25 kPa. The coating with high transparency, self-cleaning, superior mechanical and wear resistance holds significant promise for applications in optical devices, foldable electronics, precision instruments, and beyond.
