The National Engineering Research Center of Fine Petrochemical Intermediates was established as one of the subprojects of the science and technology project supported by the World Bank loan and the National Development and Reform Commission. In October 1995, the project was approved with a total investment of RMB 63,300,000, among which $4,000,000 was from the World Bank loan and RMB 28,500,000 was from the domestic counterpart fund.

By adopting an advanced technology of catalytic synthesis which can save energy, reduce the raw material consumption and cause less pollution and by using oil and gas and their processed by-products as raw materials, the Center has produced oxygenated compounds, such as aldehydes, alcohols, acids, esters etc., and provided packaged technology to raise the refinement ratio of China’s chemical products. And the Center has also provided the urgently needed technology, raw materials and intermediates for related chemical enterprises.
