Synthesis effects of Cr and Ag on the tribological properties of Cu–9Al–5Ni–4Fe–Mn bronze under seawater condition

Abstract: Tribological properties of bronze-Cr-Ag composites sliding against AISI 52100 steel in seawater were investigated. The results show that, Cr improves the hardness and strength of the composites. This can reduce the plough wear of composite caused by asperities of counterface. Meanwhile, Ag in wear debris increases the plasticity of wear debris thereby reducing the three-body abrasion. Ag also reduces the friction and wear by distributing on the frictional surfaces. The addition of Cr and Ag improves wear resistance and lubricating properties of the composites. However, the excess Cr and Ag are harmful to mechanical properties and wear resistance.
